Nordic Mountain is a ski, snowboard and snow tubing hill in Mt. Morris, Wisconsin, near Wild Rose in Waushara County. Open for 50 winters, Nordic Mountain has grown from a small local hill into one of central Wisconsin's most welcoming winter destinations for beginners, families, riders and night skiers.

Where Nordic Mountain's Story Began

Nordic Mountain opened February 7th, 1976, in Mt. Morris, Wisconsin, giving central Wisconsin a place to enjoy winter close to home. Over the decades, neighbors learned to ski here, families built traditions here, and generations of Wisconsin kids took their first turns on its slopes. The hill has always stood for the same things: a friendly lodge, terrain for every ability and a team that treats every guest like a neighbor.

How Rick Schmitz Bought Nordic Mountain at Age 22

In 2005, Rick Schmitz was a college senior with a dream of owning his own business. Nordic Mountain had been losing money for several years, and Rick was 22 with no savings and no experience in the ski industry. Several banks said no. Eventually a few believed in his vision, and he purchased the hill for $625,000.

The first years were lean. Every dollar went back into the mountain, and Rick's never give up attitude, along with a dedicated team that included Bill Ringenoldus, who started at the hill at 18 and now serves as co-owner & general manager, set the course for the growth that followed.

How Nordic Mountain Has Grown

Under Rick's ownership, Nordic Mountain has transformed into a busy winter destination in central Wisconsin. Key investments include:

Snowmaking across all 60 acres, so the hill can open reliably each season
Night skiing and riding, with lighting across the full mountain
A beginner friendly learning area, with Terrain Based Learning (TBL) built for safe, easy, and fun learning
Three terrain parks in small, medium and large sizes, refreshed with new features
A snow tubing hill, with a conveyor that carries guests and tubes back to the top
Two lodges and pub, serving food and drinks for the whole group

What Makes Nordic Mountain Different

Nordic Mountain is known for being approachable. New skiers and snowboarders learn on gentle terrain designed for beginners, while experienced riders find variety across more than a dozen runs, from easy greens to black diamonds. With day and night sessions, affordable options and activities for every age, it is a natural fit for family outings, school and youth groups, date nights and friend trips.

Today, Nordic Mountain welcomes guests from across Wisconsin and beyond for skiing, snowboarding and tubing each winter. Fifty seasons in, the mission is the same as it was on opening day: help people fall in love with winter.
